The Truth Isn’t Sexy: Sex Trafficking in Vancouver and Beyond

On August 30 Nicole Parisien was found dead behind a Kitsilano apartment building at the base of the Burrard Bridge. It turns out that one of the suites was being run as a brothel. Nicole was being exploited as a prostitute and was murdered by a john (a more accurate word is “exploiter”). Increasingly women are prostituted out of private homes in what are called “micro-brothels.” This home-based exploitation flies further under the radar as law enforcement cannot enter the home without a search warrant, and usually the activity goes unnoticed in the neighborhood. Who would have thought there was a brothel at Cornwall and Burrard in a leafy apartment building?

At “The Truth Isn’t Sexy”, held on October 12, we will look at what is happening in our city around sexual exploitation, the “demand” for women’s bodies, the coming effects of the 2010 Olympics on trafficking and how we can respond. For location and details call:
